Kate’s recent experience at CrossFit Christchurch – April 2013
I loved my free week at crossfit. Their program is awesome, they are really welcoming and helpful for new people. I was nervous going by myself but as soon as I arrived those nerves disappeared as they were so welcoming. I found the classes very challenging but I felt great about myself afterwards. I like that no matter what fitness level, everyone gets a good workout because of the scalling methods. I will be recommending you to my friends. I am very sad that I’m moving overseas for a new job and won’t be joining!

When I joined CrossFit Christchurch there is no way I could have imagined what it would do for me. At the time I joined, I had a 9 month old baby and, while I have always kept pretty healthy and active, I was struggling to get back into ‘shape’ – so that was the main reason I joined.
Fast forward 8 months, and with 3 sessions a week at CrossFit Christchurch, combined with good nutrition, I am in better shape than I have ever been, but to my surprise, that is not something I think about so much, I think about getting stronger and fitter and what my next goal is I want to achieve. I am excited to see what happens next!
I love that I get the benefit of excellent personal trainers but within a small group which is more motivating -it’s not intimidating at all, everyone is really genuine and encouraging of each other – it really drives me to work harder in the workouts, which although intense, are kept fun, varied and uncomplicated.
For me CrossFit is just part of my life now – a sport rather than a ‘gym’. I am part of an awesome community and I love it. I am hooked.

CrossFit Christchurch is a fantastic place to become a better athlete no matter what your ability or fitness goals. The workouts are demanding and will certainly put body and mind to the test, but Peter and Chris ensure that no matter how hard you push, pull, burn and hurt through the day’s workout, you will truly have some fun.
As a kayaker, paddling some of New Zealand’s hardest rivers, I must be in top physical and mental form. There is no training regimen that I have found that compares to CrossFit to prepare me for hucking off big waterfalls and staying focused during kilometer after kilometer of seething whitewater.
The CrossFit Christchurch community is a great place that includes people of all backgrounds and skill levels all coming together to truly become better people. After training with Chris and Peter for a while, I am more flexible, stronger, faster and truly in the best shape I have ever been in. CrossFit Christchurch is not just a gym, but a place to grow as an individual, find your weaknesses and truly become better at life.

I have been doing Crossfit for just over a year and am officially hooked. I love the challenge of being pushed to my limits by the trainers and other members, it’s a welcome change to regular gym sessions.
It motivates me to push myself further than I normally would.
I’ve gained lots of new knowledge and skills on how to prevent, and manage, injuries – I’ve have become more aware of how my body works and the best ways to get results from it.
Crossfit Christchurch sessions are fast, jam packed and lots of fun – no standing around, we work hard and effectively and I believe it’s helped me get results faster than any other type of exercise or programme I’ve tried before.
Crossfit has also identified some of my challenges in thw way my body moves, that in the past I may have avoided or not known about. Because of this I have now gained more strength, flexibility and co-ordination and am able to perform faster and more effectively for my work.
The trainers are inspiring and help motivate people in a positive and encouraging way. Regardless of ability, Crossfit is designed to be adapted to suit anyone, which is why I think it’s the best exercise programme out there.

What is your favourite “Workout of the Day”? Why?
Hard to say, it changes often. If I am good at it, then I like it, if I am excellent then I love it!
Have you seen any improvements/changes in yourself (emotionally and/or physically and/or nutritional) since coming to CrossFit?
Being part of a class for a start. I wouldn’t work this hard by myself in a gym, harder work means better results.
I have also been working with Sara on the nutrition. I have seen huge improvements in energy and strength. It’s the perfect balance of training and diet.
What do you like most about CrossFit?
There are several things; the technique training I get, the motivation and support from the coaches, the people I have met.
It takes a long time to repeat! And by then you have forgotten how it hurt (good hurt!) and sometimes I leave feeling proud of myself. That’s the best.
Most memorable moment so far?
It changes every week. Sometimes it’s the energy in the place – it’s awesome. Also, when you are in a group where everyone is working as hard as you – everyone wants to see everyone there succeed. Even though we work separately It feels like a team.
Any words of advice that you would like to give?
I have been disheartened at times, when things don’t go right it’s really frustrating. I have wanted to walk away. But you need to push through, its only an ego that got bruised. Chances are next time will be better. Listen to the coaches too, they do know best and they want the best from you.

What is your favourite “Workout of the Day”? Why?
Anything to do with deadlifts and situps…. bring them on! I can do them with little thought involved which is always a bonus.
Have you seen any improvements/changes in yourself (emotionally and/or physically and/or nutritional) since coming to CrossFit?
I have total improvement across the board in everything, although I find air squats frustrating and thrusters just make me cross and frustrated – a double whammy there!! Could be a warning not to have a WOD (workout of the day) with them both together.
I have way better shoulders now, which is cool, and I am stronger all over.
Nutritionally I am working with Sara and have cut out carbs which have made a difference to body workings.
What do you like most about CrossFit?
Can’t put my finger on it, but I really enjoy the fact it is one hour and come out knackered 95% of the time feeling really good about myself…. that old competitive streak just keeps rearing its head all the time.
Most memorable moment so far?
Doing better times and amounts than the younger ladies attending (even though I couldn’t do anything for three days after) and doing better than some of the regular guys….. competitive streak again. Also, completing a running WOD – I despise running – and actually did OK at it without feeling sick!
Any words of advice that you would like to give?
Just keep going and constantly push yourself in a safe way to do better each session. Listen to what the guys and Jo are telling you as they are the experts and leave your egos at the door!
